What is Tarka

An alternative asset management ecosystem, built for agriculture.

Tarka is an outcome of our decade-long pursuit of building an alternative asset management ecosystem for agriculture, reinvigorated by the pressing need to align ourselves with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Tarka’s asset classes are special investment vehicles based on specific crops and geographies. Operations start in 2026 with 10 well-grounded asset classes, increasing the offering to over 100 asset classes across 20+ countries within the next five to eight years.

Strategy pyramid

Vision, mission and goals — in one line of sight.

Every asset class we launch traces back to the same three commitments.

Vision

Improve farmers’ livelihoods and help attain food security by liberating the financial constraints faced by farmers and agribusinesses alike.

  • Empower smallholder farmers into agripreneurs through technology and finance in one smart ecosystem
  • Contribute towards climate-smart agriculture and the sustainable development goals

Mission

Create access to invest in agriculture projects for investors of many kinds — funds, fund of funds, family offices, multilateral agencies and retail investors.

  • Build full-stack technology for agri-operations and investments
  • Create a one-stop solution for agribusinesses and redirect funds towards innovative agriculture

Goals

Provide financial services and solutions using analytics and models — increasing yield and optimising operations with AI, machine learning models and farm management tools.

  • Operating in 10+ countries across Africa and Asia
  • Producing 15+ crops, from rice and maize to turmeric, cotton and oil palm

The problem

The agricultural treadmill.

Smallholder farmers — those operating less than two hectares — suffer most from a cycle of low productivity, subsistence farming and limited access to resources that perpetuates poverty and inhibits upward mobility.

Three root causes

What keeps the cycle turning

Unsustainable traditional methods

Yields stay flat while input costs rise, so each season returns less than the one before it.

Lack of up-to-date knowledge

Proven agronomy and modern cultivation practice never reach the farmers who need them most.

Limited and unaffordable capital

Without accessible finance, farmers stay trapped in the vicious debt cycle of agriculture.

The solution

From sustenance to market-oriented production.

Improved methods of cultivation, technologies and knowledge, adequate and quality inputs, and agro-ecological strategies can unlock huge potential for boosting productivity in a sustainable direction.

Four unlocks

What we put in the farmer’s hands

Access to technologies

Farm management tools and analytics built for smallholder scale.

Up-to-date knowledge

Agronomic supervision through every stage of the season.

Access to quality inputs

Adequate, quality inputs supplied and financed at the right time.

Farming for market

Consistent market access, so produce is grown against real demand.

What’s in it for stakeholders

One platform. Four kinds of value.

Tarka is designed so that the interests of capital, farmers, markets and governments point in the same direction.

Investors

Create impact while making profits.

  • Returns targeted upwards of 12% per year
  • Access to a new, uncorrelated asset class
  • A direct, measurable contribution to the SDGs

Farmers

Quality inputs and supervision.

  • Consistent, assured market access
  • Increased incomes — targeting 2× in five years
  • Agronomic supervision through the season

Markets

Assured supply and traceability.

  • Reduced anomalies across the supply chain
  • Traceability and provenance tracking
  • Predictable volumes at predictable quality

Governments

Employment and food security.

  • Employment creation across the value chain
  • Food and nutritional security
  • Climate-safe agricultural practice

“Agriculture is the greatest and fundamentally the most important of our industries. The cities are but the branches of the tree of national life, the roots of which go deeply into the land. We all flourish or decline with the farmer.”
Bernard M. Baruch, 1921 — American financier and political adviser
